17thC. Oil Painting of a French Courtesan

Portrait Painting in Oil from France, of a beautiful Female Courtesan painted in the reign and at the court of King Louis XIV of France, 1658-1715. She wears the costume of the period and holds a posy of flowers. Set in a later18th/ 19th century oval frame, the attractive painting was possibly cut down from a much larger original painting. It has a few minor blemishes and is also backed with card behind the canvas, probably dating from the period it was re-framed. -see photo. Aristocratic or even socially lesser Courtesans who sold their 'favours' for advancement were famous at Louis's court of Versailles. but as the painting is unsigned and the courtesan is not named, there is no record of who the lady actually was.

Circa 1670-1715. Measures 37.5 inches tall x 29.5 wide. In good condition with some minor blemishes, on the old varnished surface of the canvas and to the edge of the frame. French School.

  • H: 96cm (37.80in)
