18th C Spanish Brass & Leather Bound Trunk

Beautiful and rare leather covered wooden trunk or coffer from Spain with ornamental brass work and studding, and a decorative interior printed cotton lining. Both sides of the coffer have decorative brass studded 'Star of David' motifs, inside which are the carrying handles.

The coffer's lid has a very slight slope as the forward rail sits on rather than overlapping the front. It also has its original lock but needs a key to be cut. Coffers had always been traditional & important as items of furniture in Spanish homes, dating back to medieval times, and I have found some wonderful examples before, often with boxwood inlay into walnut front panels- I have never had one like this with its amazing brass work decoration. Dating between 1780 and 1850, the coffer measures 34" long x 17" high x 19" deep. In reasonably good condition, though with some wear to the leather edges of the lid and the lining. and various other small imperfections from its age and usage.
