18th C Spanish Brass Bound Leather Trunk

AEOLOGY at RELIC ANTIQUES
Beautiful and rare leather covered wooden trunk or coffer from Spain with ornamental brass work and studding, and a decorative interior printed cotton lining. Both sides of the coffer have decorative brass studded 'Star of David' motifs, inside which are the carrying handles. In the 19th century, the Star of David was not yet a specifically Jewish symbol, although associated with the Kabbala, was also and variably multi-denominational and sometimes used in Christian Churches- see the Wikipaedia article.

The coffer's lid has a very slight slope as the forward rail sits on rather than overlapping the front. It also has its original lock but needs a key to be cut. Coffers have always been very prominent and important as items of furniture in both French and Spanish homes, dating back to medieval times, and I have found some wonderful examples before, often with boxwood inlay into walnut front panels- I have never had one like this with its amazing brass work decoration. Dating between 1780 and 1850, the coffer measures 34" long x 17" high x 19" deep. In reasonably good condition, though with some wear to the leather edges of the lid and the lining. and other imperfections from its age and usage.

A pioneer in decorative antiques, Malcolm has been in the business since giving up law studies and given his passion for French and Mediterranean art and traditions, it seems apt that his London shop/warehouse nestles beside the Eurostar Rail Terminus at London's St Pancras Station.

One of the foremost dealers in naive objects, folk art, fairground carvings and the visually decorative, he is driven by his love for objects that fire the imagination. Renowned for unearthing pieces with a rare magical quality, he sources the original, the one-off and the inspiration for regular long time clients and dealers or for newer contacts seeking either something beautiful for their homes or just the making of a good investment.

A visit to Relic Antiques 'Antique Warehouse' is guaranteed to open a door to a star quality stock. Expect the unexpected, from simple craftsman made pieces, or the flippantly amusing like period shop signs and fairground art, to the more sophisticated such as charming paintings and unusual examples of country furniture.

When in London visit the 'Antique Warehouse' which is located at 133-135 Pancras Road, London NW1 1UN and though normally open late afternoons only (3pm-6pm) on weekdays and 1pm-5pm on Saturdays, it is always worth calling ahead to make sure we are open.
