Item Description

A stunning and very large scale, pair of 19th century terracotta pineapple finials by J M Blashfield, one stamped. Pineapples used decoratively and architecturally in the 18th and 19th centuries were a show of hospitality, wealth and prestige.

John Marriott Blashfield produced terracotta sculpture, ornament and architectural items from the early part of the 1840's Starting production at Millwall, London and then in 1858 he moved to Stamford in Lincolnshire, production finishing in 1875.
Publishing a number of catalogues, including 'A Catalogue of Seven Hundred Articles, Made in Terra Cotta, and Red and Cane-Coloured Pottery' Blashfield wares are fine, crisply cast, with great attention to detail, reminiscent of the Coade factory wares.
