Mid-century Oil Painting, 'Marketplace', Hans Ripa.

Painted in a sketchily manner this little gem is full of bustle. A central figure sports a white apron with red sleeves and a Poirot moustache. A woman in a blue jacket with black bobbed hair. Sun awnings of tangerine and Space Hopper orange under swishy trees.

About the Artist

Hans Arvid Ripa, born September 14, 1912 in Höör in Skåne, died in 2001, was a Swedish painter, cartoonist and theatre decorator.

He was the son of the director Herman Ripa and Holda Hanson and married the author Gunlög Bülow-Hübe and subsequently the actor Margaretha Boije af Gennäs.

Ripa studied at the Skåne Painting School in Malmö in 1928–1929 as well as in Leipzig and Dresden in 1930. Later he studied at Maison Watteau in 1934 and at Académie Colarossi in 1935 and at the Danish Art Academy under Aksel Jørgensen. During the period 1942-1950, Ripa mainly worked with theater decorations in Stockholm and Malmö and for various public park tours.

His art consists of drawings, still life and landscape motifs from Skåne and Southern Europe in oil. As an illustrator, he has illustrated Margareta Suber's travel stories, among other things. He was one of the initiators of the formation of the Skåne artist group Blandningen 1938.

Ripa is represented at the Landskrona museum, Tomelilla museum and the Sirishamn museum.
