19th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Lady

An enigmatic charcoal portrait of a middle-aged lady with her head turned partially to the side. The artist has captured an expression that's deliberately tricky to decipher. What do you see? Strength? Shyness? Regret?

The portrait is signed in the lower right, perhaps ‘Jank’, and housed within a good later frame.
