Portrait Of Audoin Fouache d’Halloy

A fine 20th-century portrait of Lieutenant Audoin Fouache d’Halloy (1889-1948), an engineer hailing from Claville-Motteville, Normandy, France.

We've managed to track down a few threads of information via Audoin’s genealogy records and discovered that he was clearly a man of intellect. As an engineer, he filed multiple patents in France, Poland and Tunisia, including one for gearing technology. While, during the Second World War, he was decorated with the Croix de Guerre, which was usually awarded for gallantry.

But it wasn’t only his working life that was full of intrigue as he was married into a very important family. Following the end of his first marriage to Blanche Marie Roederer (b. 1899), in 1932, he was betrothed to Nazli Hadidje Hamdi (1893-1958). Nazli was the youngest child of the well-known Ottoman painter and intellectual, Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910), so you can imagine that their home was full of stimulating conversation.

Osman painted a beautiful portrait of his daughter and his works continue to be in high demand.

The more we’ve discovered about Lieutenant d’Halloy, the deeper the level of intrigue and it just goes to show that behind every portrait there are a thousand stories waiting to be told.
