Item Details
This ensemble of painted terracotta figurines with linen clothing was produced in India from 1850-to 1880. The Indians belonged to different social castes and were practitioners of various professions—for example, a domestic servant with a turban. The religious beliefs of the figures are also visible. For example, one of the figures is an Indian Buddhist monk in a saffron-orange coloured robe. Similar figurines with local Indian clothing are kept in the Museum of Applied Arts of Sydney.
