18th C, Spanish School, set of 2 pilgrims statues

Two-18th C Spanish wooden sculptures representing pilgrims holding a cross. Both pilgrims have the same pose, with their back slightly bend, their head towards the sky and one arm raised. The other arm is by their side holding a small cross, clearly visible. Both pilgrims are wearing long robes and a travel cloak on top. Their hair is shoulder length and curly.Clear signs of age and patina create the charm of the statues. These sculptures fit into the spirit of late 18th C Spain. The status of apostle Saint James, the Great and the Spanish church declined in the eighteenth century, as well as pilgrimage and patron sainthood. In 1879 however, Cardinal Payá announced a protracted revival of the Jacobean cult in Spain. Throughout the Catholic world over the course of the late 19th and 20th C, the immediate effect was to breathe new life into the cult of St. James Day (July 25) festivities and collective pilgrimage became a sizeable event once more.

For COLLECTIT! by SPECTANDUM owner Guy Kuypers, the history of his collecting began at the Porte de Clignancourt in Paris with a Napoleon III case filled with Exotic Birds. The colorful birds piqued my imagination and became the beginning of a passion for Natural History, Ethnography, European Works of Art, Antiquities and Curiosities that drive me on all continents, looking for fascinating and rare objects. Whether they are natural or man-made, all have an interesting story to tell.

So, it is finally in this spirit that the collection, which encompasses Natural History, Tribal Art, Paintings, Sculptures and Curiosities from many cultures and periods in history finds its rationale and its roots.
