Item Description

Pierre Alechinsky was born in Brussels in 1927 into a family of doctors of Russian and Belgian origin. From 1944 to 1948 he studied illustration, typography and printing techniques at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels. From 1949 onwards, he took part in the avant-garde Cobra movement, which advocated spontaneity in the artistic gesture.

In the 1950s, Pierre Alechinsky was initiated or perfected in various techniques such as engraving, calligraphy and ink painting until the discovery of acrylic painting with which he created in 1965 his major work with "marginal remarks", "Central Park", composed of a central image surrounded by a border completing it with other works. This painting will appear in the last exhibition organised by the Surrealists in 1966. Pierre Alechinsky devotes himself as much to monumental mural works as to bibliophily drawings accompanying contemporary works (Michel Butor, Yves Bonnefoy...) as to classics (Apollinaire, Cendrars, Proust...). Numerous retrospectives are organised in museums around the world (Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1987, Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in 1998, Centre Pompidou in 2004, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in 2007).
