Bronze and Enamel bust of Caracalla

CUBBIT ANTIQUES
A large Bronze and Enamel mid 20th century bust of Caracalla.

Some enamel has chipped and some discolouration all consistent with age.

Caracalla was the popular nickname of Antoninus (4 April 188 – 8 April 217), who was Roman emperor from 198 to 217. The eldest son of Septimius Severus, Caracalla reigned jointly with his father from 198 until Severus' death in 211. For a short time Caracalla then ruled jointly with his younger brother Geta until Caracalla had Geta murdered later in 211. Caracalla is remembered as one of the most notorious and unpleasant of emperors because of the massacres and persecutions he authorized and instigated throughout the Empire. Caracalla's reign was also notable for the Constitutio Antoniniana (also called the Edict of Caracalla or the Antonine Constitution), granting Roman citizenship to all freemen throughout the Roman Empire, which according to historian Cassius Dio, was done for the purposes of raising tax revenue. Caracalla also commissioned a large public bath-house (thermae) project in Rome and the remains of the Baths of Caracalla are still one of the major tourist attractions of the Italian capital.

In my 20's I worked for Chesney's, one of biggest fireplace companies in the UK. Although I only got to work there for a few years, a passion for fireplaces and everything antique and architectural started to grow. Fortunately for me, I had two very good friends who ran an architectural yard and have over 20 years combined experience in the antique and architectural game. Over many pints and discussions we started to work together travelling up and down the country and even overseas, buying everything from fireplaces, lighting and garden antiques.

Although we have spent years running fabulous items to some of biggest dealers in London, the plan has always been to open a shop and get a website up and running. We slowly collected everything from fireplaces to lighting and everything in between. We opened Cubbit Antiques on Lillie Road in London a few years ago and the shop has been doing great, enabling us to grow and meet with a great clientele. Whilst we sell online, you can't beat seeing and touching an item in the flesh and we hope you will be able to visit our showroom, nestled amongst a number of antique shops
