*SALE* Early Christ Child

Early 18th century Hispanic Christ Child or Santo Niño, carved in pine and exhibiting its original gesso with traces of original polychrome paint. Holding his right hand to offer a blessing, his left held out, possibly to hold the globus cruciger.

Though originally decorated with vibrant and life-like colours, figures such as this were often intended to be dressed in exquisite hand made clothes and wigs, the faithful offering such items as acts of their devotion.

This one stands on a carved base but does stand independently as well. Both the figure and base are numbered in pen to the underside which may suggest it was once a museum exhibit.

With age related wear, cracks and losses, but that’s why we love it.

Spain, c.1700

At Cunningham White's we source decorative antiques and furniture. We are guided by great decorative value, recognising the emotion that can be gained from owning something that just looks and feels so good. We don't pin ourselves down to one particular style or period. We simply love good looking things.

Sam finds and Naomi fixes (although sometimes it's the other way round) and as a team we manage to always have a quality selection of stock in our collection.

We believe that antiques are the future. Timeless, quality pieces add so much character to any scheme and can make a house into a home. They are sustainable. They haven't been thrown away because they are made to last and they can be fixed. We do that bit for you (if it's needed). Antiques reflect our individuality and connect us to past generations. We will always try and find out the provenance of a piece and share that with our customers.

We gladly welcome visitors but please let us know when you plan to visit as we're often out. Our workshop is based in the grounds of a working rescue farm in the characterful, vibrant and independently minded community of Totnes in beautiful South Devon.
