A charming naive school portrait of a 9 year old Edward Haynes Eversley, stood in a country house interior, his dog sat at his feet, begging for a biscuit. There is a table with a sumptuous green cover, a vase of flowers, books and the plate of those biscuits. A giltwood and red upholstered chair is to the boy’s right with - my favourite part - a green parrot, watching on. All stood on a rather splendid looking carpet.
Oil on canvas, unframed. Obvious signs of age. Inscribed to the reverse and signed by the artist, ‘J.C. Miles’ - John Christopher Miles, an artist whose works achieve good results at auction.
According to records, Edward Haynes (or Haines) Eversley (1841-1924) had connections to North America and also Somerset, England. He married Hester Elizabeth Penruddlocke and they had 3 children.
