Item Description

The very large painted pine column or pedestal cupboard standing at over five feet high and of classical form, the whole being painted in buff cream with turquoise veins to simulate Italian marble, one side with a cupboard door opening to reveal two interior shelves, and surviving from nineteenth century central Italy.

The piece shows wear to the paintwork commensurate with its age which makes it appealingly decorative. Structurally she is sound with some movement to the top plinth. One side remains unpainted as per the photographs, so it was obviously positioned flush to a wall. The rear has had some later supports added to the base. The top lends itself to displaying sculpture, being particularly suited to neoclassical pieces, and metallic or stoneware items.

There are interesting handwritten inscriptions to the inner door to the cupboard reading ‘pesaro vantana’ and others such as ‘Tonto’ and ‘Segratorno’, which may lead to further information to the pieces history but we can only assume it resided in Pesaro which is a seaside resort near historic Urbino, in the region of Le Marche, on the eastern side of central Italy. The size of the piece points to it having been used in a shop, restaurant or hotel for example. Otherwise it would have lived in a very spatial Italian residence.

An imposing, useful and decorative piece of furniture that is likely a total one off.
