17th Century Flemish Princeswood veneered cabinet

FOSTER AND GANE
The parquetry veneered two-door cabinet enclosing a fitted interior of drawers and a central cupboard. Princeswood was an extremely valuable and rare timber and used only on important commissions. A table in Drayton House along with two stands, dated to 1660 - 1675, share the same princeswood veneers in this geometric format. See A Bowett, English Furniture 1660 - 1714, From Charles II to Queen Anne, Suffolk 2002, p. 114.

Bowett notes that 'Princeswood was the most expensive cabinet wood in general use in the late 17th century, and this was almost certainly the reason for its name - only those with princely incomes could afford it'.

Unusually, the drawers are lined with a hardwood suggesting this is more likely of Continental manufacture and almost certainly Flemish.

On a modern bronzed steel stand.

Flemish, circa 1660s
