A pair of etched glass panels by Nils Landberg

The thick sandblasted, etched and acid-etched glass depicting mermaids, dolphins and ocean scenes. Designed for the Henriksbergs Restaurant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This pair of glass panels were part of a larger collection of pairs, each of which were set into doors in the restaurant, and each set being different. In the archives of Kulturparken Småland AB there are images of one other pair and also a set of three which were windows into one of the Transatlantic bars in the restaurant.

Manufactured at the Orrefors glass factory. Sweden, Signed and dated 1950. Mounted in bronzed metal frames with hanging points to the top. The glass panels can be removed from the frames.

Nils Landberg is considered one of Sweden's pre-eminent glass designers of the 20th century. He was active at Orrefors between 1925 and 1972, initially as an engraver and from 1936 as a designer. His most recognisabe designs were his elegant and delicate 'Tulip' glasses but he took on public and private commissions such as these panels.

He started engraving glass and debuted at the Paris Exhibition in 1937 and also participated in the World Exhibition in New York in 1939. He won the gold medal at the Triennial in Milan in 1957 and is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, in Germany and the United States.
