Item Description
This wonderful 19th century Mahal carpet is square shaped with a subtle blue-grey colour background which compliments the grand scale drawing. It is framed by a wide terracotta border. There is natural colour variation (abrash) in the central field which adds great depth and richness to the drawing and its variety of colour combinations. Rare in this squarish format.
This attractive rug belongs to a group of carpets specifically commissioned in west Persia during the Late 19th/Early 20th century to complement European furnishing tastes. They are unique due to their grand scale drawings, quiet formality and use of soft understated colours. They are often seen in grand stately homes in Europe and the UK.
Antique Ziegler carpets work well in modern spaces as they have the aesthetic ability to unite and balance both classic and contemporary design elements.
In very good condition with harmonious vegetable dyed colours which have aged nicely.
A decorative carpet with discrete elegance to complement a wide variety of settings.
