Striking c.1920 Oushak carpet

The weaving of Oushak carpets in Western Turkey began in the 14th century with the beginning of the Ottoman empire. Two centuries later during the 16th century, the carpets became highly valued as objets d'art and were often featured in Renaissance paintings. The region of Oushak became a major weaving centre of furnishing carpets in the 19th century, particularly for the Western market. Early Oushak carpets are appreciated for their soft silky wool, large scale drawings and subdued colours which complemented European and western furnishing tastes.

This striking example has a bold graphic drawing and a colour composition of ivory, grey, and muted chocolate brown. The natural colour variation in the field adds great depth and richness to the simplicity of the geometric design. It is in excellent condition. A stylish and versatile rug to complement a wide variety of settings.

Gallery Yacou is a family owned business run by Robin Yacoubian and his father, Ezekiel, and has been in the family for over four generations specialising in antique, decorative and contemporary carpets.

We passionately believe in the importance of choosing the right rug for each individual room, and that the rug not only complements the space but adds depth and soul to it.

With our broad depth of knowledge and collective experience, we are able to advise our clients on the various options we have in our collection that would complement the various spaces.

We work with a range of clients including leading interior designers and architects, members of the design industry, hoteliers, private clients and collectors. Some of the projects for which we have provided rugs include grand listed buildings, hotels, embassies, modern city apartments, 17th century abbeys, country houses and residential homes.

We have just recently relocated from our showroom on the Fulham road to our studio/workshop in North London.

We are members of the antique dealers associations, BADA and LAPADA, and an Industry Partner of BIID, the British Insititute of Interior Design, and exhibit annually at the BADA & LAPADA Fairs. Please email us using the enquiry form opposite, if you would like a complimentary ticket to any of these Fairs.
