Item Description
Striking c.1940 Beshir Rug
2.48 x 1.65 m
Beshir rugs are woven by the Beshir tribesmen of Turkmenistan and are known for their distinctive weaving style in a region where rugs are predominantly recognised by their 'elephant foot' patterns in deep reds and dark blues.
This striking mid-20th Century example has a unique, creative drawing with an irregular colour variation giving great depth and richness to its simple drawing. It also features a repeated paisley, or 'botteh' pattern - originally an ancient Zoroastrian design, representing the evergreen cypress tree, a symbol of everlasting life.
Preserved in excellent condition, its original fringes retained on both ends, this piece would add character and charm to any setting.
