John Stanton Ward RA watercolour portrait girl '74

This framed original painting is a portrait of a girl by the well-known Royal Academician, John Stanton Ward, RA (1917-2007).

It is in watercolour with pencil on good quality artist's paper, signed by the artist lower right and dated September 1974. I also have a companion watercolour of a boy and I presume that they are sister and brother (the second work is listed separately). The watercolour is in good condition. The frame appears to be the original made by J C Farley & Co of London, WC1. It has been fitted with a hessian style mount, popular at that time. The frame has some signs of wear and tear but it is serviceable. The work measures about 8.5 x 11.8 inches image size and about 16.5 x 19.5 inches framed size.

John Stanton Ward, CBE, RA, RWS, RP, NEAC (1917–2007) was one of Britain’s best known painters in the second half of the 20th century, working in oils, watercolour, pastel and pen and ink. He was born in Hereford and studied art at Hereford School of Arts and Crafts 1932-36, then at the Royal College of Art 1936-39 and again at the RCA 1946-47 after war service. Initially he worked as an illustrator for Vogue magazine and then began a long career as a painter of portraits, especially noted his pictures of Royalty and celebrities. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1949 and was elected ARA 1956 and RA 1965. He was also a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and of the New English Art Club. He resigned his membership of the Royal Academy in 1997 in protest at the ‘Sensation’ exhibition. John Ward’s work is represented in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, National Maritime Museum, Government Art Collection, The National Trust, City of London Corporation, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Canterbury City Museums & Galleries, Ferens Art Gallery Hull, and Harris Museum & Art Gallery Preston. Created CBE in 1985. He lived for many years at Bilting, near Ashford in Kent.

I focus chiefly on Modern British paintings, drawings and original prints from the 1890s to the 1950s by well recorded artists. This has been my area of personal collecting interest since the late 1960s and now that collecting has extended to dealing, I tend to offer only those things I enjoy myself and in which I have confidence about the quality of the work, condition and value for money.  The majority of the stock is figurative, although I do have a keen interest too in 1950s and 1960s abstraction, and thus the inventory will be varied. At times there will be work by good European, American and Australian artists of the early to mid 20th century. I do not deal in contemporary art.

There are several hundred works in stock at any one time, a good number of which will be shown here on the Decorative Collective. The stock changes regularly and I aim to keep this site up-to-date. Sometimes I will bring out something I have had in my private collection for decades. I am really a collector at heart who has accumulated far too many pictures over more then fifty years.

I can also be found on (the Art Detective section), where I contribute especially to discussions about artworks held in public collections in South East England, East of England and the Midlands. I am also working with Art UK on a number of curations to help the public navigate the site to best advantage given any particular interests they may have. Art UK is well worth a visit.

My elder son Nick Waters deals in Modern British art as well. He is also on the Decorative Collective under Nick Waters Art and on the DC's sister website, Hoarde Vintage under the business name RetroSixty. He deals in Post War art but sometimes has 21st Century artists in stock, such as Sir Peter Blake and Joe Tilson.

The prices shown for my stock on Decorative Collective include shipping to the Great Britain mainland. Shipping is available elsewhere, but do please ask me for a quote. I try to keep the costs as low as possible without compromising the quality and speed of the shipping process. Overseas clients may also have to pay import taxes / Value Added Tax or similar in their own country. Every sold item is accompanied by a detailed receipt, including the name of the artist where known, and all such items identified specifically are guaranteed as being authentic.

In order to enquire further about a work on this site, or to make a purchase, please contact me on 07738 730952 (any day from 0800 to 2100 UK time) or via email by clicking on the CONTACT DEALER tab on each stock item page. Enquiries for other artists not listed on my site are always welcome as I or my son may have something in stock or we may know where such a work may be located. Normally I will endeavour to get back to the caller the same day. I am very happy to provide additional images, a condition report, and further background information about any work. On request I will reserve available works for up to 72 hours to allow the client time to make a decision. Viewings are normally possible by appointment in Angmering, West Sussex, and are very much welcomed, as I recognise that clients may prefer to see pictures 'first hand' before making a decision to buy. I have been in Angmering for well over thirty years.
