Carved Serpentine Grand Tour 'Dog of Alcibiades'

HAND OF GLORY
An After the Antique Grand Tour carved serpentine model of The Dog of Alcibiades, also known as 'Jenning's Dog'.

The original 2nd Century AD Roman sculpture was named after its first owner Henry Constantine Jennings, who acquired it in Rome in the 1750's. It is also sometimes referred to as 'Duncombe's Dog' as during the 1770's it was sold by Jennings to settle gambling debts. Purchased by Rt. Hon Charles Duncombe it stood in the entrance hall at Duncombe Park, Yorkshire until 2001. It is now on display at The British Museum.

A nice little example dating from the late 19th Century. some chipping to the base and slight chipping to the ears.

With a lifelong passion for the subject, Lisa has worked in the word of art and antiques for over 25 years.  Sixteen of these were spent as a Director of an Auctioneers in London before moving to South West France with her husband Marc Allum to restore a rambling 17th Century Chateau, which they used as base to host art and antique holidays. 
 
After returning to the UK in 2012, Hand of Glory was born, offering an eclectic mix of antiques, objects and.... in the words of John Tradescant; 'anything strang (sic)'
 
In addition to running Hand of Glory, Lisa also writes for various magazines.
 
Clients are welcome to view pieces at the shop opened in November 2019 at 34 Market Place, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN15 3HP. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Other times by appointment.
