Josef Hoffmann Fledermaus Chair

INGLIS HALL ANTIQUES
This iconic bentwood horseshoe shaped secessionist chair was designed by Josef Hoffmann in 1905 for his most famous commission, the Cafe Fledermaus in Vienna. This example was retailed commercially by J,H. Kohn a few years afterwards. c1910/12, the chair has its original J.J. Kohn paper label, and a branded mark into the wood (see last 2 photos). It also has a brass number tag, this would have been from the establishment it came from, a cafe/club or theatre. Its condition is very solid and it has good age related patina.

Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870- 1956) was a celebrated Viennese architect and designer known for his modern aesthetic. Important architectural projects included the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, the Stoclet Palace and the Cabaret Fledermaus. Hoffmann was a key figure in the Vienna Secession movement and together with Koloman Moser founded the highly important workshop of modernist craftsmen known as the Wiener Werkstatte
