A pair of red Kubas

KIKI DESIGN
A pair of hand stitched African Kuba textiles, early C20th. Depicting geometric shapes made using fine black thread hand sown on a terracotta red background cloth. Kuba textiles were unique to the Democratic Republic of Congo formally Zaire and were known for there use of geometric designs and surface decoration. Tho men made the cloth or rafia - it was the women who did all the geometric designs and embroidery. The background cloth of these Kubas have been dyed with twool - a deep red substance made from the heartwood of specific tropical trees and only used in prestige cloths. In Kuba culture twool is believed to have magical and protective properties. Kuba cloths had many purposes including being used for ceremonies, rituals as well as exchanged as currency. These pair have been mounted on stretchers.

Sarah Roelich founded Kiki Design in 1998.   She has a well-established knowledge of antiques and modern design having worked for Christie’s Fine Art Auctioneers and with various interior design companies.  In Kiki Design she used her diverse experience to create a company with an eclectic look that embraced design from all periods.

Jon Fairweather joined Kiki Design in 2010 bringing with him a wealth of experience from a specialist twentieth century retailer and an eye for the visual from his time spent working in film and television.

Together Sarah and Jon have expanded Kiki Design - opening a shop in Petworth and extending their range of furniture, art and design. Where necessary pieces are sympathetically restored and finished to a fine standard.  Kiki Design has developed a look that encompasses all styles from antique to 20th century. Sarah and Jon passionately believe that a harmonious and timeless interior is achieved by selecting vintage and antique pieces to complement each other.
