Item Description

An amazing, 17th Century Spanish cabinet with escritoire. Great patination and colour. Having an architectural piedmont top and cornice with dentil moulding and a central turned finial. There are three sections below. The top section consists of an open cupboard with two doors having turned balusters. The middle section has borders of metal ornamentation of ribbon. The corner ones holding the catches to the fall which is elaborately decorated on the outside with arabesque inlaid panels, centred with a pierced iron escutcheon. It drops to reveal and arrangement of seventeen beautiful small drawers, all having intricate marquetry and tiny pull handles. The sides have substantial iron drop handles and mounts centred in geometric inlaid patterns. The bottom section is a cabinet having two drawers, with locks and keys, over two cupboard doors with further elaborate inlay. Standing on half bun feet, All original ironwork throughout.

This type of cabinet was also known as a "wardrobe cabinet", this unusual furniture did not belong strictly to domestic furniture, but was used in public places or homes of major importance where they could be seen and because of this an example like this one is very rare.
