Item Description

19th Century Qājār Steel peacock having naturalistic form with a wide detachable fan-tail. Highly decorative engravings with scrolling floral designs radiating from a central motif and continuing throughout. Standing on a square plinth.

In classical mythology the peacock, most regal of birds, was the attribute of Juno, the queen of the gods.

The Qājār era is renowned for the vast and highly-skilled production of gold-damascened steel vessels and ornaments. Steel (pulad) was widely available in Iran and had been in use in these lands since the pre-Islamic period.
