Adam period carved and painted pine chimney piece, the decoration is all carved in wood, similar chimney pieces often use moulded jesso for the decoration, as such this is a particularly fine example. It is of very generous proportions to accommodate a fireplace on a grand scale. When installed the use of a slate or stone slip on the inside of the timber surround can be used to make the aperture fit the chimney piece. The stepped mouldings beneath the mantel shelf to a gadroon carved frieze. The central tablet with garlanded classical display. To the ends, roundels of carved acanthus over jambs with gadrooning. The panels are carved with vases over a garland of bell flowers and honeysuckle. Two plinth bases. English, circa 1770.
