Item Description

John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961)
Study of a lady
ink on paper
signed, verso

11.5cm H, 9.5cm W (within mount) 31cm H, 28cm W (the frame)

Provenance: Private collection, Scotland.

The verso (the back) of this sketch has various marks in ink and amongst those lines are quite clearly the signature of Fergusson three times over.  The study comprises two joined pieces of paper, the joined section with an inscription in Fergusson's hand saying indistinctly "to Dr M**man?".

John Duncan Fergusson was one of the four Scottish Colourists, born in Edinburgh where he studied at the Edinburgh School of art before moving to Paris.  The colourists enlivened the Scottish art scene, all inspired in France by the Impressionists, exploring light, shade and atmospheric effects through painting en plain air.
