A pair of british rail ladies room + gentlemen ena

LJW ANTIQUES
These two lovely 'Ladies Room' and 'Gentlemen' enamel signs come from the Southern Region (identifiable by their green background colour) of the British Rail Network and date to the 1950s. British Railway's enamel signs are very iconic and combine simple, clear typography with vibrant colours and have their lovely rounded edges.

These signs are both single sided - each would have originally been back to back with a matching sign so that it could have hung from the middle of the platform/station and been visible on both sides. They now hangs neatly against a wall. Perfect for a shop/cafe/bar/restaurant where they can be both functional and decorative.

The signs are in particularly good, clean and bright condition. The gloss is excellent (I've tried my best to capture this in the detailed photographs) and the green is wonderfully rich. Each sign has a few patches of enamel loss around the outer edges along with some very light surface scratches (not really noticeable except under a raking light) but generally both remain in fantastic condition.

Each sign measures 91.5cm wide x 30.5cm high x 2.3cm deep.

Dimensions:

  • H: 30.5cm (12.01in)
  • W: 91.5cm (36.02in)
  • D: 2.3cm (0.91in)

Period:

1950s

I'm Louis Walpole.  Over a decade of working for and alongside some of the best antique dealers in the country at London's renowned Portobello Road have helped me to form a detailed understanding of, and appreciation for, a diverse array of antiques.  In 2016, after dabbling in the trade since childhood I decided to follow my heart (and ignoring the myriad of people advising against it) leave my salaried job to trade full time.  Since then I have travelled around England and Western Europe collecting the pieces that particularly interest me.  These pieces loosely follow the themes of; automotive, advertising, scientific and industrial.  I have a select number of items on display at Atlam on Portobello Road, London.  The shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm.

If you would like to view any of my pieces in London, please get in touch to confirm that they are at the shop or to arrange for me to take them there for you.  It may also be possible for me to bring items to your home / bar / garage / pub etc, so they can be fully appreciated in-situ.  Again please just get in touch and we will see what can be organised.
