Item Description

This free standing Pearces Ice Cream enamel sign in it's original iron frame work is a real rarity.

It's a lovely, simple and bold design - the star next to 'sold here' an unusual but sweet design choice. Originally the lettering would have been a strong cobalt blue, set against the bright white background. Over the decades the blue enamel layer has oxidised and darkened in some areas, though the bright blue is still visible - especially across the 'Ice Cream' wording. I've not been able to find much information about Pearces Dairy / Ice Cream - it would seem that they were a British brand as I've seen one photo of a shop in Leicestershire with a similar sign out front but other than that it's speculation. I think the sign dates to the 1930s, perhaps '40s.

The supporting arm to the rear of the sign is a replacement with a nut welded to the iron frame - a simple but effective repair. Generally the sign remains in excellent order; as per the angled photos, the lettering has dulled but the background remains bright and glossy. The frame has aged nicely and there are just a few small patches of enamel loss around the very outer edges of the sign, where it meets the frame work.

When stood, the sign measures 85cm high x 52cm wide x approx. 62cm deep.
