Jules Leleu, French Walnut Gueridon Dining Table

LOVEDAY
An extremely good quality and elegant French Art Deco walnut guéridon extending dining table with a stunning radiating sunburst top designed and signed by Jules Leleu.(1883-1961)

Finely constructed with choice cuts of straight grained European walnut, this large circular table known as guerdon is also an extendable dining table which has four drop down legs and can receive two extra leaves (leaves not present). The circular top veneered in a sunburst (lunette) pattern, with four rectangular supports each edged in bronze, all poised on a central cross-shaped support with four bronze tipped feet.
Signed on ivorine plaque by Jules Leleu himself.
Design after model No 2527 circa 1936.
In excellent condition having very good choice of veneers which have retained a wonderful colour. The centre leaves are not present so if desired would have to be reproduced, originally the leaves where extremely plain and unfinished so often discarded and not desirable.

About Jules Leleu
This piece has particularly impressive provenance as it is signed by its designer, Jules Leleu who was of the one key authors of the Art Deco movement. His family firm of Maison Leleu had existed since the eighteenth-century and he helped to guide it through much of the twentieth century.
Leleu exhibited at the prestigious 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs, winning a Grand Prize there and one of his pieces was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum in New York* (Acc.No. 46.93). He was also an active participant in the annual Salon D’Automne and Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.
Leleu was a prolific ensemblier, with a large number of private and public clients including the French ocean liners, Ile-de-France, Atlantique, Normandie and France. Amongst other important commissions were a dining room for the Élysée Palace, and the Grand Salon des Ambassadeurs at La Societé des Nations in Geneva, named the Salon Leleu, which is still in existence today. His pieces are highly prized and can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée les Arts Décoratifs, and Collection Mobilier National in Paris which holds over one hundred of his pieces.

Leleu is celebrated for his conception of refined furniture forms and precision craftsmanship. His furniture is generally spare and sleek. He made significant use of opulent materials that were a keynote of haute Art Deco design and favoured the use of woods with warm tones, such as amboyna, Macassar ebony, and as on this piece, walnut, all of which imparted richness and elegance. He had his own distinctive and sophisticated style, often sober and reflective of traditional French furniture design, but also modern in line and use of materials, and always in excellent taste.

The term ‘guéridon’ originated from France in the mid-seventeenth-century and originally described a small table, usually circular, which supported some form of light, such as a candelabrum. Leleu has carried this theme through to the modern age by fully exploiting the beautiful natural grain of the wood to create a spectacular sunburst (or lunette) design for this table top. The sunburst was a major motif in Art Deco design which was characterised by its celebration of modern life and exuberance. It would therefore make a wonderful dining room centrepiece, perfect for entertaining friends and family.

Now into the second generation, Loveday antiques is run by Alexander Loveday.

From the early days until 2012 Loveday Antiques had three major showrooms running, located at Chelsea, Ascot and Islington, but sensing the major shift towards the online side of the business in January 2013 Alexander decided to close both Chelsea and Ascot and concentrated more on working via the internet and website as traders, interior designers and the public's buying habits changed.

The internet now allows us to trade globally 24/7, whilst keeping our overheads down and passing on these savings to our clients.

The start of 2014 has also led to more change, relocating the original showroom in London from The Furniture Vault in Camden Passage, from where we have traded for over 40 years, to our new showroom conveniently located in Hertfordshire within the A1 and A10 areas, just off the M25.

The new showroom is just North of London and only a 20 minute train journey from Kings Cross, London to Stevenage, with just a short 10 minute drive from there.  We are can easily arrange to pick clients up from the station as long as you let us know when you are coming.  If you are driving, it is 10 minutes from both the A10 and A1m.
