Antique oil painting - coastal scene

A well-executed oil painting on board of a British Isles coastal scene, signed 'Ethel, 1905'. This is very competantly painted, with loose brushwork managing to create a convincing weight and depth to the composition. The reverse of the panel has been signed 'Ethel' in pencil. It also has a set of painted inventory numbers to the lower right corner, suggesting that it may have previously been exhibited somewhere.

There is a handwritten name 'Ethel Walker' on the back of the board. This may allude to the Scottish-born artist Dame Ethel Walker (1868–1951). Whether this painting is by her or not, we are not certain. There are elements of the painting that are quite impressionistic, but overall it is not particularly typical of her recognised works, so it is not currently being attributed to her.

Some minor scratches to paint surface, and some gesso loss to frame.
