Josef Herman – Dusk

Josef Herman, RA ‘Dusk’. In 1965 Josef Herman was commissioned by Marlborough Fine Art, London, to produce a small series of three lithographs which were to be printed at the Curwen Studio. Herman visited Andalucia in southern Spain and produced sketches mainly in gouache for these works known as ‘Dusk’, ‘In the Mountains’ and ‘Figure Against Dark Sky’. Some of these sketches are held by The Tate Gallery.

The present lithograph is an very good example of the print in colour known as ‘Dusk’. It is pencil signed by the artist lower right and dated ’65’ and lower left it is annotated ‘AP’ for Artist’s Proof’.

This work is on a full sheet which has remained in storage for many years and has never been framed. Overall the lithograph is in very good original condition with great colour. There is no fading or tears to the paper. There are some light spots of foxing to the extreme edge of the right hand margin only and some very minor creasing at the edges. This print should frame up very well.

The work measures about 22.7 x 31.5 inches (578mm x 800mm) sheet size; unframed.

The price is inclusive of delivery to Great Britain mainland. Please enquire of us for shipping costs to other destinations.

Josef Herman, OBE, RA (1911-2000) was a well-known Polish born painter, draughtsman and writer. He studied at the Warsaw School of Art 1929-31 and moved to Brussels 1938 and to Britain 1940. Herman lived in Glasgow initially, then settled in London and for about eleven years from 1944 he lived in Ystradgynlais, a mining village in South Wales near to Swansea. His paintings and drawings of coal miners represent some of his best and most recognisable work. After leaving Wales for health reasons in circa 1955 Herman lived briefly in Spain and then in west London and Suffolk. He exhibited for many years with Roland, Browse and Delbanco in London W1 and had several retrospective shows during his life including at Whitechapel Art Gallery, Boundary Gallery and the New Grafton Gallery. His work is represented in a number of public collections including The Tate Gallery; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. He was awarded an OBE in 1981 and elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1990.

I think I was always destined to have an interest in the world of Modern British Art and 20th Century design. My father wrote books on the subject in the 1970s and having grown up (literally!) surrounded by mainly 20th Century art, I began to take an interest myself in the late 1990s. My personal taste is in the work of artists such as Wlhelmina Barns-Graham, Lynn Chadwick, Alan Davie, Terry Frost, William Gear and Julian Trevelyan. In regard to furniture I collect, and sometimes deal in, pieces by designers including Poul Kjaerholm, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Robin Day.

The website stocks paintings, drawings and prints mainly by well known Post War British Artists and I also have a few works by continental, American and Australian artists. I established the business in 2014 and this website operates alongside my first art business, which I formed in 2006. The Nick Waters Art stock is to be found on the Decorative Collective and the Retro Sixty stock is on the, the sister website to the Decorative Collective. Nick Waters Art mainly lists works priced at £500 or above and is generally likely to suit the more experienced collector and / or dealer, corporate collections or indeed public collections, some of whom we have worked with in the past. The prices always include shipping within mainland Great Britain, with items packed securely to a high standard, using recycled materials wherever possible, and shipped promptly. I do ship further afield and discounted prices to other locations are available on request (please see the contact form on the Decorative Collective website adjacent to my listings).

My father's business dealing in 20th Century art is also to be found on Decorative Collective.

I provide a condition report on each item with my listings on the Decorative Collective. The authenticity of each piece is guaranteed and a detailed receipt is issued on sale. If viewings of works in person is required, we are in Angmering, West Sussex, and viewings are possible, usually seven days a week, but by appointment only. Also further images of works for sale will be available on request.

I do hope you enjoy the visit to my site/s, and if I can help with anything, no matter how large or small, please feel free to ask. Thank you for looking.
