Nushka, in Hindu word meaning “precious possession”, specialise in fine vintage textiles and rugs.  We pride ourselves in finding beautiful items from around the world and bringing them to our shop in Portobell Road. We hold a variety of textiles and have a passion for indigo, whether from China, Africa or South America.  Some lengths are sold as seen and some are turned into wonderful cushions or lampshades.

Nushka is the creation of husband and wife team, Farnoushe and Andrew Damonte.

Always having an eye for design, Farnoushe worked at the Conran Shop. Ever since her teens, Farnoushe has always been interested in textiles, design and colour. “I was particularly inspired by a shop that opened on Portobello Road in the late 80’s importing the most beautiful artefacts from India. That’s when the urge of travelling to India and the dream of starting a shop began.” Andrew is an interior architect. After 20 years at Westenholz Antiques, Andrew followed his passion for textiles, design and dealing in Berber rugs. “I was introduced to Berber rugs by Peter Hinwood and during a holiday to Essouraria found a great source. My father was born in Essouraia and so trading from the small seaside town on the Atlantic has a special resonance.”

During a recent trip to India, Farnoushe and Andrew were inspired by the beautiful array of textiles that were on offer – whether new or just old, the symmetry, colours and haphazard motifs on Indian textiles have not changed over all these centuries. Andrew and Farnoushe enjoy working with designers and they love the new range of embroidery cushions from Lindell & Co designed by Gabrielle Soyer. They’re always on the look out for new, fresh inspirations!
