Ayres rocking horse

A fine example of an English carved wooden Rocking horse.
The work shop belonging to Frederick Henry Ayres, was situated in Aldersgate Street, London, where although well known for many sports related games, they also produced some of the most beautiful, finely carved wooden rocking horses of the 19th century.
This one being a particularly good example. It has survived relatively unscathed since it came off the production line around 1880, with just a few minor battle scars!
Originally painted as a pale dapple grey, the varnish has since yellowed creating a deep antique patina. The stand is of the highest quality, with beautifully seasoned, turned beech columns raised on a long sturdy platform, completely free of any wood worm! The saddle and most of the tack have survived the passage of time, but the mane and tail have been replaced at some point, but still with genuine horse hair.
This is one of the largest examples of an Ayres horse, yet quite feminine in detail, even down to the long eyelashes!
A delightful decorative object.

Phoenix is a beautiful shop, situated in the historic town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, in Kent.

Peter & Robert have have worked within the antiques industry, for over thirty five years and joined forces to open Phoenix Antiques thirty years ago and in that time, they have built a thriving successful business.

Initially specialising in original painted furniture, some pieces often being painstakingly hand scraped down to the very first period colour, a true labour of love!

This passion naturally flowed into the love of the beautiful French fruitwoods, so often used in many of the carefully chosen pieces they now stock, together with many fabulous period mirrors, chandeliers, sconces, upholstered furniture and many more deliciously decorative things.

They have a fabulous look and have built up a large discerning client base, both here in the U K and overseas. Please do look at the website here.
