Antique Art Deco Bronze Panther by Cartier C. 1920

A beautiful large Art Deco patinated bronze study of a crouching panther, signed Cartier for Thomas François Cartier (1879-1943) and Circa 1920 in date.

The finely cast sculpture evokes a crouching panther in motion with fantastic attention to detail. It has a dark brown patina and stands on a beautiful naturalistic rocky outcrop.

Thomas François Cartier

is a French sculptor and late practitioner of the animal style, a mid-19th century trend of naturalistic but fictionalized portraits of animals in both painting and sculpture. Cartier specializes in model-sized pieces depicting hunting dogs and large cats which are often placed inside clocks and other decorative items. He was born on February 21, 1879 in Marseilles and although little is written about him, he is known to have participated in the Paris Salons from 1904 and for which he won a gold medal in 1927. Cartier died in 1943
