Antique Pair of French Gilt Bronze Urns 19th C

This fine pair of French gilt bronze urns date from around 1870. The decoration is superb, featuring beautiful flanking cherubs, basket weave banding, laurel leaves, garlands and lions mask mounts.

They stand on lovely black marble bases that terminate in ormolu plinths. They have been produced using the traditional ‘lost wax’ or ‘circe perdue’ process. The craftsmanship is superb throughout all aspects of these gilt bronze urns and they are sure to add an unparalleled touch of glamour and class to any surroundings.

As you can see from the photos, this pair of French gilt bronze urns are in excellent condition with no damage. You are always welcome to visit our North London warehouse to see this for yourself.

More About the Lost Wax Method
This is a traditional metal casting method used to produce a bronze item from an artist’s sculpture. Also called by its French name of cire-perdue, this is a method where molten metal is poured into a mold that has been created by using a wax model. Once the mold is made, the wax model is melted and drained away leaving a space to pour in the molten metal which then sets to produce a solid metal item.

Lost Wax Method
sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture.

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
