Chinese silk tapestry bedspread early 20th century

Huge silk tapestry, 240cm x 204cm, in superb condition. Dating to the early 20th century

Profusely embroidered with an exotic, Arabic theme. Featuring turbaned elephant, horse and camel riders among date palms and cacti. An unusual design that represents a Chinese take on Orientalism for the late Victorian, western market.

Machine embroidered on a high quality, heavy, Indigo/Purple silk ground with a limited colour palette of Gold, Olive Green and Lilac. The ground can appear a range of colours dependant on how the light is hitting it, from Purple to Royal Blue. The fringing uses the same colour silk as the ground but, not being sheer, reflects the colour more accurately both in our images and in the flesh.

The piece is fringed to three sides and plain on the top edge. This suggests, along with the size and the heavy, durable quality of the textile, that it was created as a bedspread. It can certainly be used as one, it comfortably reaches the floor either side of a super king bed. Looks amazing as a wall hanging tapestry or a window/door curtain. A very versatile and attractive piece.

Some pulls and loose threads to the fringing, minimal and has no impact. One small repair where an area of fringe has pulled apart and been sewn back together. Some small areas of staining to the ground. These may come out but are in our opinion not worth the risk of damaging the silk. Please see images, we can send more on request if needed.

UK Mainland shipping is possible right now by standard parcel courier, at £25. It may also be possible to ship internationally straight away, but in all instances please contact us first to check on restrictions due to Covid-19. We can store any items for you if we are unable to ship immediately.

We are Rebecca Roche and Alex Coward.

Our background is in the visual arts, and we value craftsmanship and skill in all things.  This love for quality and beauty, and the scarcity of it in so much of modern manufacturing, has led us to this venture: A Bohemian boutique offering rare, unusual antiques, art pieces and vintage items for the home and garden.

Our style is not for the faint hearted!

We lean towards the highly decorative.  If you don't immediately recoil at the prospect of having a huge polychrome carved Balinese temple door in your living room you are in the right place.  We don't do beige or magnolia and we may not be the landlords go to choice, but why choose neutrals when you can have Turquoise or Gold?

We like painted things, woven things, carved things and gilded things.  If it is unique and beautiful, if the hand of the artist is present, we like it.  We love great design, elegant lines, bold colour. And gilded things.

We source items from across the ages, from 18th Century Asia to 20th Century Europe.  We want to help you create bespoke interiors, to mix and match; to provide an eclectic, rich, opulent and exotic living environment.
