Huge pair of Shasavan tent hangings 1940's/50/s

So Boho!

These are an especially rare pair of decorative tent hangings made by the Shasavan nomads of Northwestern Iran, around the mid 20th century.

Very large, at 189cm x 100cm each, they appear to have been made for the purpose of being purely decorative. Very unusual from a culture that so readily combines the decorative with the utilitarian. They follow the same construction of the traditional Shasavan "spoon bag" or Qashoqdan but without the storage bags.

The plaited, black wool lattice hangs from a wonderfully embroidered flatweave band, featuring some beautiful iconography of stylized figures and animals, including a pair of foxes in socks and what appears to be a car with luggage on the roof. Both pieces feature very different designs at the top, and there are hanging loops at either end of the bands. The latticework terminates in thick burgundy red tassels and is adorned at each intersection with scraps of coloured fabric. These scraps are from printed fabrics and look like they date to around the late 40's/early 50's. They are original and integral to the piece, it is the fabric scraps that tie the latticework together.

Highly decorative and exceptionally original, they are the original precursors that inspired the classic bohemian chic style. They are a fantastic find from an interior design point of view. They will look amazing in a domestic setting: picture them over a door, along the bottom of a window as a cafe curtain, around a four poster bed etc, they would make a wonderful and unique wedding bower or, hung both together, they will make an entire feature wall.

Condition: Overall very good, the flatweave bands are clean, completely intact with no losses. Good strong colour. Some fraying/thinning to the latticework: It has worn through in a couple of places, in one instance someone has retied the ends resulting in one tassel being higher, see images. One hanging has lost one of the red tassels, the other has all the tassels but one has at some point come loose and lost around half the original wool so is thinner than the others. Overall around 96% intact as originally made.

Price is for both hangings. UK shipping is £15, please contact for International shipping quote.

We are Rebecca Roche and Alex Coward.

Our background is in the visual arts, and we value craftsmanship and skill in all things.  This love for quality and beauty, and the scarcity of it in so much of modern manufacturing, has led us to this venture: A Bohemian boutique offering rare, unusual antiques, art pieces and vintage items for the home and garden.

Our style is not for the faint hearted!

We lean towards the highly decorative.  If you don't immediately recoil at the prospect of having a huge polychrome carved Balinese temple door in your living room you are in the right place.  We don't do beige or magnolia and we may not be the landlords go to choice, but why choose neutrals when you can have Turquoise or Gold?

We like painted things, woven things, carved things and gilded things.  If it is unique and beautiful, if the hand of the artist is present, we like it.  We love great design, elegant lines, bold colour. And gilded things.

We source items from across the ages, from 18th Century Asia to 20th Century Europe.  We want to help you create bespoke interiors, to mix and match; to provide an eclectic, rich, opulent and exotic living environment.
