A George III mahogany clothes press

RON GREEN
Possibly by Thomas Chippendale. The pair of solid mahogany doors enclose an interior that would have originally had five pull-out shelves, but has since been converted to hanging. The drawers are lined in oak and retain their original brasses, raised on bracket feet supported by stacking blocks - a common trait in Chippendale's work.

White chalk inscription 'Knights' underneath the base.

"In my opinion, this is a perfect example of utilitarian Georgian furniture - great timber, functional and strong. Chippendale has a way of making, what should typically be boring pieces of furniture, very pleasing."

A virtually identical clothes-press was supplied to Sir Lawrence Dundas for Aske Hall, Yorkshire by Thomas Chippendale in 1764. (C. Gilbert The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. I, London, 1978, p. 159 and vol. II, p. 135, fig. 243)
