Item Description

P0136 Fine 19th century hand carved mirror in Belle Epoque Style, having original bevelled edge glass with some speckle in finely carved frame. The frame is carved with ‘les pearls’ which symbolises strand of pearls and leaf motifs throughout. The centre top crest is decorated with arrows of justice crossed with a flaming torch of truth are joined by a floral and leafy and scrolled embellishment. The flaming torch is an ancient symbol of life, truth and the regenerative power of fire while the quiver of arrows signifies the ability to use force in the pursuit of justice, the base of the mirror having centre cartouche with berried laurel.
This antique mirror retains its original bevelled edge glass with some foxing (small scratch to the right hand side, shown on the photo), original gilt with some ‘touching up’ over the years, red oxidation showing through and its original backboards. All in excellent home ready condition. C1890
