19th Century Mask

THE HOUSE OF ANTIQUES
19th Century Papier Mache Japanese Mask
We are proud to offer a wonderful example of a 19th Century papier mache Japanese mask attributed to a dramatic iki-ningy (living doll) from Japan. This was a cultural phenomenon in the evolution of doll-making in Japan that began in 1852 with an exhibition in Osaka. Eventually, life-sized, overly dramatic, and super-realistic figures in scenes from mythology gave way to pieces that were created for the export market as souvenirs of Japanese culture. This example is handcrafted from papier mache with a lacquered hand painted surface and glass eyes. A wonderful object with a lot of visual impact and presence as shown in the photos provided.
Size in inches: H 10” x W 8.5” x D 5”
Origin: Japan
Period: 19th Century
Material: Papier mache / lacquered / glass eyes
Condition: These items is completely solid in structure and form, an aged patina and fading of the painted surface has taken place. Light aged blemishes and chips across sections of the surface are present as shown in the photos provided. The close-up photos have been supplied to illustrate these points so please observe carefully and propose questions to us if needed.
