Folk art Aunt Sally

THE HOUSE OF ANTIQUES
Early 20th Century Folk art Aunt Sally Carnival Figure
We are proud to offer a unique early 20th Century folk art scratch built English Carnival Aunt Sally Figure, life size construction and an exceedingly rare example of its kind. Made from sectioned wooden construction and found objects this highly sculptural form would have in its day been used as an amusement game. The objective of the attraction would have been to through wooden balls at the face from a distance, specifically aiming for the eyes. Ones hit the eyes would push back releasing an internal mechanism that would push forward a large leather tongue and ringing a bell at the base of the figure. This mechanism still works rarely enough if somewhat stiff due to its age and years of use. It now functions with you physically pushing in the eyes in simultaneously which releases the mechanism. The rear of the hand carved head come of to reveal an internal metal mechanism as shown in the photos provided. Made using hand carved wood, detachable arms, and section carved rear head sections, brass and metal material for the functioning bell movement which is all crudely constructed firmly onto a wooden crate. This item was luckily uncovered in a barn find from a large country home in Hampshire early this month. A complete one-off example with remanence of its original paint in areas, now a highly sculptural form and wonderful original piece of English folk art carnival history.
