Scrimshaw Powder Horn

19th Century Scrimshaw Powder Horn
We are proud to offer a lovely example of a 19th Century Scrimshaw powder horn. Covered in handcrafted scrimshaw detail depicting a variety of folk-art animals and figures including a bull, matador, lady, dog, and rabbit. With the artists initial S T and date 1886. This item is rare due to it still having its horn carved screw top stopper still in place which can be removed as first intended to load and unload gunpower for a musket riffle. Finished in brass, wood, and circular patterns to create this lovely, decorative piece of folk-art.
History: Powder horns are containers used to hold gunpowder. Historically, soldiers made Powder Horns from cows, oxen or buffalo horns. Natural horn has the advantage of being waterproof and already hollow inside. Stoppers of wood or bone or horn were placed at each end of the horn. A soldier filled the horn with gunpowder at the large end, and dispensed powder from the smaller end or stopper.Soldiers sometimes decorated their Powder Horns with scrimshaw carvings or inlays.
