Item Description

19th Century country house dinner gong figure

We are proud to offer an exceptional 55-inch-tall fine figural country house dinner gong figure in the form of an oriental man which is hand carved pine with gesso detail. All section carved body, shaped bamboo legs and midsection detail with glass eyes. With long ponytail real hair detail. Wearing its original 19th century Chinese court official's winter hat made of soft black velvet and is covered with red silk fringe and hand-crafted brass and wood knob. The green colour knob on the top of the hat indicates that this hat was a Qing official's hat, and the knob is an imperial court cap knob button antique. This figure is also still wearing its hand-crafted silk gown and stool on a hardwood detachable base. This figure can be dismantled into sections for ease of transport, this is a rare example at this size and a real museum piece.

Size in inches approx.: H 55” x W 18” x D 15”
Period: 19th Century
Material: Wood, Gesso, Glass, Silk, Velvet
Origin: China
Condition: Aged

Completely solid in structure and form, worn surface, loss in certain areas and aged over time naturally. The bamboo detail is lost in areas and aged repairs are present with some breaks. There is wear across the gesso sections with loss of paint and natural damage. The gesso over the shoes is worn to expose areas of the pine beneath. The hat is worn and faded in section as is the silk gown which is torn and faded in areas. A rare survivor and in over very presentable condition.
