19th Century Bronze Crypt Lantern

THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL
A rather odd crypt lantern, cast in bronze the shapely triangular platform has three bone columns raising up to an arched Gothic frieze. Either side the wings of a bat and angle reside fully stretched symbolising the end of life and passing to heaven. There are traces of gilt work on the angle wing. The lantern has three hooks for hanging, one is a later replacement the two originals are hand forged iron. There is also a later drill hole in the top section, were another potential replacement had been housed. The piece is extremely well cast and heavy for its size, the lantern has its original oxidised finished (has just been very lightly clean) the chains are of a similar colour but not original but work never the less. European in origin, Early 19th century in age, possibly earlier

Central triangular section, Max height 38cm

Wing span, 60cm
