Item Description

A collection of six copper plate engravings from John Stalkers "A Treatise of Japanning & Varnishing" 1688.

Framed in modern faux bamboo frames, each engraving depicts distinct patterns with instructions for Japan work for tables, frames, cabinets and boxes. The original book contained 24 engravings along with the best way of making all sorts of varnish for Japan, wood, prints, plate, or pictures, the method of guilding, burnishing and lackering.

Unfortunately the original binding is rare to find complete, as the authors suggest that owners remove the patterns for use as transfers.

Each engraving is heavily foxed, with small losses and imperfections to all sides, some small minor tears.

Each frame is 30/43cm
