Trio of 19th Century Death Masks

THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL
A trio of late 19th Century Death masks, a thick plaster form taken from the deceased the technique was used prior advent of photography. Often used for the famous individuals to maintain a record of their faces after death in order to continue depicting them accurately. Many criminals were cast so a permeant record was available for study, also unknown corpses for the purposes of identification. This function was later replaced by post-mortem photography.

The plaster has age related colouration and wear, the masks also sit on a thick wire stand and also have hanging hoops for wall mounting.

The three masks range in height from 37cm - 31cm and are all approx 18cm in width and depth
