Item Description

A set of 12 extremely fine hand-coloured engravings from:

Flore des Jardiniers,Amateurs et Manufacturiers[...]Paris: Audot, 1836.

Pancrace Bessa was an outstanding pupil of Redoute and in the employ of the Duchess of Berry as a painter of natural history subjects.

In the legend, one can see the scientific and French names of the depicted plant. The name of the artist, "P. Bessa Pinx. " is always on the left side. The name of the engraver is on the right side and varies from engraving to engraving. The natural habitat of the plant and when it blooms is shown on the lowest left line. Sometimes the various anatomical details are named on the right lower area. The hand-colouring on these engravings is outstanding, almost like watercolours.

They are presented in bespoke frames behind UV70 glass which cuts reflection and affords the prints some protection.
