1st Edition Elizabeth Blackwell engravings

TIGER LILY ART
A set of 12 engravings by Elizabeth Blackwell from the rare first edition of "A Curious Herbal", published in London between 1737 and 1739. Elizabeth Blackwell undertook the work with the encouragement Sir Hans Sloane and with the intention of paying off her husband’s debts. She took a house opposite the Chelsea Physic Garden in order to draw and engrave the plants which were under cultivation there. Abridging the text of Miller's Botanicum Officinale her husband helped by supplying the common names of the plants in various languages and the scientific information. Elizabeth made not only the drawings for, but also etched and engraved the copper-plates, and afterwards coloured the 500 printed illustrations by hand.

The condition of these prints is excellent with fine hand colouring, almost like watercolours in quality. Wonderful chained hand made watermarked paper, they are presented in bespoke frames behind UV70 glass which cuts reflection and affords the prints some protection.

For TIGER LILY ART what began as a hobby has become a small family run business. Based in Surrey, we deal in sets of antique prints and engravings of largely botanical and natural history subjects, but also items which we like and would be happy to hang at home. In fact, this is our guiding principle - we stock nothing that we would not be happy to own ourselves.

We are passionate about what we do and all our prints and engravings are in excellent condition bearing in mind their age, are presented in bespoke frames behind UV70 or Tru Vu glass. Mounts are chosen with care to enhance the subject matter and all sets are put together so that they hang well together. Inspection is welcome by appointment.

We are happy to discuss specific requirements and will split sets in certain instances, should what we have on offer not work in the chosen position.

We have a large portfolio of unframed items too which can be framed to order.
