French Kingwood and Ormolu Bureau Plat Late C19th

A fine French kingwood and ormolu-mounted bureau plat by the renowned and luxury Parisian furnishers, Au Gros Chene, Paris. Having a gilt-tooled leather top framed with timber crossbanding and gilt bronze mounts to each corner. Below is a large central drawer, decorated with a Gilt Bronze mount of the Roman God Bacchus, flanked by three drawers pedestals. All drawers are mounted with the most elaborate, scrolling foliage handles and escutcheons. Each corner has an elaborate carved and chased figure of a lady and each foot terminates in a delightful lion paws foot. The end panels with beautiful contrasting veneers and central gilt bronze masks. The opposing side of the desk being replicated with faux drawers. All drawers have a lock and key, several having the retailers label still intact. The majority of the drawers are oak lined, always a sign of quality. An extremely good looking and functional piece of antique furniture,
The well-regarded furnishers ‘Au Gros Che^ne’ were situated in 12 Rue Drouot, Paris and today, the site is occupied by the Hotel Drouot, the exhibition center of the majority of French art auction houses. We date range this item from 1880-1900. The ingenuity of this cabinet maker is evident with the piece breaking down into four separate pieces for ease of transport and installation.

Hello, my name is Miles and I would like to welcome you to my store Tinker & Toad.

We are a family run business in the heart of the beautiful Sussex countryside. We deal in an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture, architectural salvage, re-worked industrial lighting, decorative arts and a carefully selected choice of paintings and modern art.

We have a bricks and mortar shop in Heathfield, East Sussex where we always welcome first-time buyers, collectors and interior designers. We have retailed from the shop for 18 years and took over the premises ourselves in 2015 and have seen a gradual increase on returning customers. We pride ourselves on giving a personal, friendly shopping experience and hope you will arrive a stranger, but leave as a friend.

With our love of both antique and modern interiors, we enjoy helping our customers to furnish a space, whether it's a loft apartment, a club, a cottage or a castle. We have supplied many wonderful customers, including Soho House, The Box Club London, Elmore Court Gloucestershire, Bonnington House Scotland and the Ned Hotel London. I am happy to take a phone call seven days a week, 8am to 8pm or feel free to pop me over an email. We look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards, Miles.
