Crewel Silkwork Needlework Panels Parrot Birds

TRINITY ANTIQUES
This is a fine example of 4 genuine 18th century fragments of silk work embroidery upon a running stitch quilted silk ground with traces of the original wool batting underneath. These four feathered friends were only a small fragment of a much larger 1700's period coverlet but my they are certainly to drool over. Later framed and glazed, circa 1870-1900 in a good, sturdy beech frame with metal hangers. Please study and magnify our many close up images taken with a high zoom lens so that you can get up close and personal.

We see four different exotic parrot birds, each captured in varying poses. These gorgeously exotic creatures were obviously inspired by the fabrics and designs that were being imported from the far east at this early 1720 period. The very fine and intricate quality of the stitching is to be marveled at. The shading worked in the varying polychrome silk threads is superb.

Beds were enclosed by a full set of bed hangings in the 18th century both for warmth and privacy. These bed hangings would consist of drapes, pelmets and coverlets. Generally such furnishings from the Queen Anne period onwards, grew lighter in design and weight. Heavy weight bedcovers were substituted for several lighter layers. The more luxury, expensive bedcovers imported from England to the USA were often embroidered in silks or polychrome wool upon a silk ground with mock quilting. Please see similar examples to our fragment in The Gawthorpe Textile Collection which is a coverlet. See also examples at The Met, The Winterthur and Colonial Williamsburg and pages 99 and 100 of the Lanto Synge book Antique Needlework.

Size: Frame 27" by 8" by 0.25". Each silk panel approx 4.75" square.

Condition: Please bear in mind that each silk embroidered panel is just under 300 years old and as such will have some shredding to the silk quilted ground; the colors however have remained vibrant. The Victorian frame has some minor wear to the corners with new backing paper added in the past.

A scarce and decorative set of four ancient textiles that are just ready to hang and admire.
